Rosehill House Private Air Raid Shelter, Caversham Reading

Image
Deep below a manor house in Caversham lays a former WW2 Air Raid Shelter that was originally built as a Wine Storage for Caversham Manor/Rosehill House then later on converted into a Air Raid Shelter.  It is believed and said that the air raid shelter wasnt public use it was a privately owned one by the Caversham Manor Estate.  The air raid shelter still even has the original metal blast door. Original Metal Door Looking the other way into the former wine cellar/WW2 Shelter This isnt a purposely built shelter, It was converted from a Wine Cellar.....

Palmer Park Public Air Raid Shelters, Reading

Image
Situated in a public park in Newtown lays remains of two public air raid shelters, sadly both of them have been cemented over and have been for a very long time now. Both of them have no access but you can see the mound of the air raid shelters from above ground and the entrance along with the escape shafts. The first one situated next door to Palmer Park Libraries this one you can see the shelter very well. The second is further down across the other side of the park on the London Road side, this one you cant see very well as most of it has overgrown but you can see the cemented entrance where the stairs once would have been. Talking about underground stuff, there are many stories of a chalk mine situated under this park, there is no photographs or signs of it being there. Small Stanton Air Raid Shelter located in a public garden in Caversham, it seems to have been converted into a pump room for Thames Water in recent years. This is one example of many which was or still are situated in Lower Caversham/Upper Caversham area. Inside there is a few orginal posters still on the walls but most of it has been converted and made suitable for Thames Water. Coley Air Raid Shelter, Reading

Image
Air Raid Shelter situated in Reading Town on a road called Coley Place just off Castle Hill, Theres no access to the air raid shelter due to  it being bricked up. The air raid shelter was used during WW2 and is situated next to where the cobblestone gateway entrance path is which lead to the Former Morris Garages site which is now demolished. The Air Raid Shelter contains four separate rooms. It seems originally there was a blast wall in front of the two entrances but later on was either demolished or collapsed, Inside there was four rooms which are all connected by one corridor. The Air Raid Shelter has been sealed for many years and i dont ever remember it in my lifetime being accessible. If you head over to Coley Recreational Ground you will see the mounds on the green where there was once two air raid shelters which apparently still remain today but covered over with no access.         Bricked up entrances into the air raid shelter. Where the Blast wall would have been. Air Raid Sh

Whiteknights Park Air Raid Shelters, Reading

After hearing about Air Raid Shelters at Whiteknights Park I decided to get up and start looking for them, after many attempts going through  the woods looking for air raid shelters or remains I finally found them tucked away close to Earley Gate. There is 3 Air Raid Shelters I know of on site one is a white square brick building near the prefab WW2 buildings the others are red brick. The red brick ones are not accessible and there is no chance of getting inside while the white brick one is accessible and always has been from what I have been told. Inside not much remains mainly just full of junk and a old bicycle but the weird thing about the air raid shelter was the power it worked! History  These three air raid shelters sit on the site of the Former RAF Reading now known as Earley Gate. During the Second World War, part of the park closest to the Earley Gate entrance was used for 'temporary' government offices, and several ranges of these single story, brick built, corridor

Emmer Green ARP Shelter, Reading

Deep below a corner off a busy road in Caversham  lays a derelict wartime subterranean ARP Wardens Post, a wartime relic from Readings past. Built as  a Air Precutions Post for WW2. This ARP Post was very much easily accessible if you know where to look, seeing as work is ongoing above to fill the shelter in, it made it very easy to access. Inside it was in very good condition but there is signs of the metal tin corrugated tin was rusting away leaving the mud and earth to fall into it and like up. As soon as I heard about this place I shot over to this location with my camera all charged up and tripod along with series of torches to light it up.
